As children grow and learn, their vision plays a critical role in how they experience the world. At Texas State Optical Fair Oaks, we’re committed to helping families in Fair Oaks Ranch and surrounding areas protect their children’s eyesight through advanced myopia management treatment.
Understanding Myopia
Myopia is a common vision condition where distant objects appear blurry while close-up objects remain clear. It typically begins in childhood and progresses as the child grows. With the increased use of screens and reduced outdoor time, the number of children developing myopia is steadily rising.
Clear vision is essential for a child’s success in the classroom. Whether it’s seeing the board, reading from a distance, or participating in sports, myopia can make everyday tasks more challenging. Children who struggle to see clearly may fall behind academically, avoid reading, or experience headaches and eye strain.
The Importance of Early Detection
Regular pediatric eye exams are crucial for early detection of myopia and other vision issues. Vision screenings at school may miss subtle problems, but a comprehensive exam with our optometrists can detect early signs of myopia before it significantly affects your child’s daily life. Catching myopia early means we can begin management strategies that not only correct vision but also slow its progression, reducing the risk of future complications.
What Is Myopia Management & Why Is It Important?
Unlike traditional eyeglasses or contact lenses that simply correct blurry vision, myopia management aims to slow the progression of myopia. This is important because higher levels of myopia are linked to an increased risk of serious eye conditions later in life, such as:
Retinal detachment
Glaucoma
Myopic macular degeneration
Cataracts
By taking steps now, we can help protect your child’s vision for years to come.
MiSight® 1 Day Soft Contact Lenses
One of the most effective tools in myopia management is the MiSight® 1 day contact lens—FDA-approved specifically to slow the progression of myopia in children aged 7 to 18. These daily disposable lenses offer a safe, convenient, and non-invasive option for managing your child’s vision while fitting seamlessly into their daily routine.
MiSight® works by using a special dual-focus optical design that not only provides clear distance vision but also creates peripheral defocus in the retina. This defocus helps to signal the eye to slow its elongation, which is the root cause of increasing nearsightedness.
MiSight® lenses are:
Comfortable and easy to use for young wearers, making them an ideal choice even for first-time contact lens users
Clinically proven to reduce the rate of myopia progression when worn consistently
Designed to correct vision while simultaneously managing the growth of the eye, which is key to slowing the advancement of myopia
At Texas State Optical Fair Oaks, we offer MiSight® 1 day contact lenses as part of our comprehensive myopia management program. We take time to ensure your child is properly fitted and feels confident and comfortable using their lenses, with ongoing support and follow-up care from our experienced team.
In addition to MiSight®, we also offer low-dose atropine eye drops, another clinically proven option for slowing myopia progression. Atropine drops are typically applied once daily and work by helping to relax the eye’s focusing mechanism, which may contribute to reducing the rate of eye growth in children with myopia. This treatment is especially beneficial for younger children or those who may not yet be ready for contact lenses.
The Role of Atropine Eye Drops in Myopia Management
Atropine eye drops have emerged as an effective treatment option for managing myopia progression. Atropine is a medication that belongs to a class of drugs called anticholinergics. While it has been traditionally used to dilate the pupils during eye examinations, recent research has shown that low-dose atropine eye drops can help slow down the progression of myopia in children and adolescents.
Atropine eye drops work by temporarily paralyzing the muscles in the eye that control the shape of the lens. When these muscles are relaxed, the eye is unable to elongate as much, preventing the progression of myopia. Low-dose atropine eye drops, typically ranging from 0.01% to 0.05% concentration, have been found to be effective in reducing myopia progression without significant side effects.
The Benefits of Atropine Eye Drops
Using atropine eye drops for myopia management offers several benefits. It has been shown to significantly slow down the progression of myopia. Studies have demonstrated that children using low-dose atropine eye drops experienced a reduction in the rate of myopia progression compared to those not using the drops.
Atropine eye drops are also easy to administer and require minimal effort from the patient. A single drop in each eye before bedtime is typically sufficient. Lastly, atropine eye drops have a favorable safety profile, with minimal side effects reported. Some individuals may experience temporary sensitivity to light or blurred near vision, but these effects usually subside with continued use.
Using Ortho-K in Myopia Management
Many patients come to us every day struggling to get through their daily lives with their current choice of vision correction. Some have eyeglasses that do not sit properly on their face or feel that their peripheral vision is hindered by the frames. While contact users may find the lenses uncomfortable or have them fall out at inconvenient times. For these patients, we are pleased to offer orthokeratology, or Ortho-K, a revolutionary way to help you see clearly throughout the day without having to wear glasses or contacts and without having to get laser eye surgery.
What is Ortho-K?
Generations ago, eye doctors knew that the tissue in the eye was soft and somewhat malleable. This knowledge caused them to wonder if they could push the eye back into the proper shape, would an individual be able to see clearly even if they were not wearing their prescription lenses. With the development of gas permeable contact lenses, a few eye doctors began to notice that their patient’s prescriptions did not change as rapidly as previously noted and that they appeared to be able to see correctly even when they were not wearing their contacts.
From these early discoveries, the world of Ortho-K was born. Ortho-K is a special treatment to help patients see clearly even when they are not wearing a prescription lens. Instead, a special gas permeable contact lens is placed into the eye each night before bed and the lens gently pushes the eye into the proper shape while you sleep. In the morning, you can remove the lenses and still see clearly throughout the day. Some patients can even see clearly for up to three days after wearing them for just one night!
Who Should Consider Ortho-K?
There are a number of issues that our patients can have with prescription lenses. If you have one of the following conditions or concerns, call our office today to schedule an appointment.
Allergies to the materials in contact lenses
Dry eye that is made worse by wearing prescription lenses
Dirt or other debris that gets under contact lenses
You play sports and do not want to worry about glasses or contacts
The ability to wake up at night and see clearly
A general dislike of glasses or contacts
How Long Does Ortho-K Take?
Once you receive your custom Ortho-K contact lenses, it will take anywhere from one to four weeks to fully see all the benefits to your vision that they will provide. However, some of our patients find that their vision has improved after only wearing their lenses for a single night! During the first few days, you may also still need to wear prescription lenses to see clearly enough to drive or get through your normal day, but that is generally quickly resolved. Also, some patients experience some mild discomfort for the first few nights, but as your eyes adjust over a few days, you should no longer be bothered by the feel of your lenses. Is the Procedure Safe? Orthokeratology was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2002. The procedure is considered safe, effective, and reversible. However, there are some side effects associated with Ortho-K. Most of these side effects are a result of improper cleaning of the lenses that can lead to a minor infection. These infections are usually remedied fairly quickly with the use of antibiotic eyedrops.
